First All-Electric Building In New York City is Almost Ready for Occupancy
The building at 505 State Street is nearing completion, with the expectation that it will be complete later in 2024 and ready for residents. The building will feature 440 apartments that are all-electric. This decision by the developer to keep gas appliaces out of the building is in part to bolster its sustainble profile, but to also get ahead of a new rule that will go into affect in 2026 requiring electric appliances.
The 44-story building is the first all-electric skyscraper in New York City and is a demonstration project to show that it can be delivered as density increases in many cities. Located in downtown Brooklyn, it features electric induction stovetops, electric heat pump dryers, and all-electric heat throughout the building. The building is also designed to minimize its own energy demand with heavily insulated walls and triple-pane windows.
The building's website also claims that all of this will be "powered by locally renewable energy sources, [ensuring] carbon neutral operations all year long."
There will also be 200 bicycle parking spots for residents to use.
