In Rotterdam, work continues on De Zalmhaven I, a 215-meter residential building, with one floor completed each week.

The completely prefabricated building is employing a self-hoisting building shed on top of the construction to shield the construction site from the weather. The crown of the building will be jacked up through the roof of the hoisting shed from a height of 187 meters, according to project architect Dam & Partners Architecten. After placing the mast, reaching the highest point of 215 meters is targeted for September of this year.

Featured Buildings

Recently released images of the lobby and ground-level facilities of De Zalmhaven I show the semi-public space will also include a café and commercial space. The building is inspired by the high-rises of 1930s New York, a city with which Rotterdam has a strong connection. The building features glass corners, natural stone façades, and a transparent top.

Two lobbies keep the public and resident flows separate. The public lobby with natural stone walls of beige travertine and light terrazzo floors forms a connection between the Houtlaan and the new park on the Gedempte Zalmhaven. An atrium in the heart of the building with lush planting provides access to daylight. The entrance to the restaurant on the 57th floor is also located in this lobby. In contrast to the brighter public spaces, the elevator lobby for the residents of the high-rise is decorated more intimately and clad in black marble.

De Zalmhaven I is complemented by two flanking residential towers, De Zalmhaven II and III, each 70 meters tall, designed by KAAN Architecten.

Completion of the project is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.
