Announced on Thursday, 7 December, Büro Ole Scheeren has won a competition for the design of the new global headquarters of tech giant Tencent in Shenzhen, China. Named the Tencent Helix, the project takes the form of four connected twisting towers, with a central landscaped surface.

The project is located in part of a burgeoning new district in Shenzhen. It is intended to house over 23,000 employees and have around 500,000 square meters of floorspace, almost twice the size of the Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Each tower will reach varying heights, with the tallest topping out at a maximum of 153 meters. The exteriors will be finished with intricate prismatic glazed panels, ensuring lots of daylight permeates within. The individual buildings will be arranged around a large, lush central garden area named the Vortex Garden, which will provide opportunities for users to enjoy green space and fresh air. Underneath this, inside the actual building, will be the so-called Vortex Incubator, which will host multiple recreational spaces and will be naturally illuminated with a skylight.

Envisioned as the headquarters of the future, the multi-dimensional space for social and business interaction drives innovation and growth and defines the Tencent’s global presence in an iconic new piece of architecture.
