CTBUH Member in Focus: Arup

One of CTBUH’s long-standing members, Arup has been with the Council since 1983. With offices in 34 countries, Arup is a truly global firm of designers, advisors, and experts dedicated to sustainable development in the built environment that continues to push the boundaries of what design and engineering can achieve to shape a better world.

The firm is recognized as the designer and engineer behind some of the world’s most ambitious structures. This includes the 678.9 meter Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, which will rank as the second-tallest building in the world when complete, and the newly opened 50-story cantilevered 8 Bishopsgate in London that is one of the tallest office buildings in the UK to have achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification.

As a member of the CTBUH, David Farnsworth, Arup’s Americas Property Leader notes:

“The Council brings together the greatest professional minds from across the world to explore and share how we can all contribute to creating more sustainable vertical urban infrastructure in our global cities, balancing the needs of a growing world population and the finite capacity and health of our planet.”

Arup is redefining expectations of high-quality urban living and working environments with human-centered, resilient, and sustainable buildings. Their work continues to evolve in response to the changing aspirations and challenges of tall building developers, owners, and occupants alike. Other recent snapshots of their innovative work across the globe include the CTBUH 2023 Best Tall Building Worldwide, Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney.  The retrofit design for the 210.4 meter building saved approximately 12,000 tons (1.09 million kilograms) of embodied carbon by reusing as much of the existing building as possible.  181 Fremont, currently the third tallest building in San Francisco, and CTBUH 2019 Structural and Geotechnical Award Winner, utilizes viscous dampers in a mega-brace configuration to deliver a high degree of seismic resilience.

Jeremy Edwards, Arup’s Global Property Leader, adds: “We are a firm driven by innovation and collaboration. Arup is really proud to have had our people and our projects recognized by CTBUH over the years, particularly through numerous awards, but also to be an active contributor to new research, sponsorships, and knowledge sharing.”
