William Sharples is a founding principal of SHoP and an innovator recognized across the industry for his pioneering work in developing and advancing systems that bring the design and delivery of world-class architecture into the 21st century. His background in engineering has driven and supported this celebrated work for 35 years, while he has applied his discoveries to award-winning projects in complex, urban contexts around the world. William holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. Notable projects include Manhattan’s East River Waterfront, the Botswana Innovation Hub, the Collins Arch complex in Melbourne, a peerless new headquarters tower for Atlassian in Sydney, the reimagination of the Hudson’s Site in downtown Detroit, and a portfolio of high-profile diplomatic facilities around the world as the recipient of a Design Excellence contract with the U.S. Department of State. Beyond the studio, William has earned a reputation as a leader of his generation of architects and a powerful advocate for design quality and the importance of continued process innovation in contemporary construction. He has taught and lectured widely and currently serves on the Height and Data committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. In 2018, he cofounded Assembly OSM, a next-generation enterprise focused on increasing urban housing supply by delivering architecturally distinctive high-rise buildings through a proprietary process of digital design, offsite manufacturing, and unitized on-site installation.
