Dr. Tugce Akbas Bozkurt, is an experienced researcher and development coordinator with a demonstrated history of working in the structural steel industry. Dr. Akbas is currently the Deputy General Manager of Atak Engineering, a leading construction firm specialized in steel structures in Turkey, and an Adjunct Faculty at Middle East Technical University. Dr. Akbas holds a Professional Engineering license from California, US. She is also a board member of Turkish Structural Steel Association and a member of Ankara Chamber of Industry Women Entrepreneurs Council.
Dr. Akbas completed her undergraduate studies at Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2011 as valedictorian. She holds a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees focused on Earthquake Engineering from Lehigh University. During her studies at Lehigh under the advisory of Dr. Richard Sause and Dr. James Ricles, she participated in two NSF-funded research projects on the development of Self-Centering Concentrically Braced Frames and Self-Centering Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Walls. Her research areas include the design of steel structures, earthquake resilient design, and self-centering systems.
Dr. Akbas also had a chance to work at Leslie Robertson Associates’ (LERA) New York office during her stay in the US and participated in the structural design phases of some prominent high-rise buildings and special structures. During her practice at Atak Engineering, she has successfully completed many international projects in mixed use such as commercial buildings, stadiums, industrial plants, logistic centers, and high-rise structures which are located at different geographies including Europe, Middle East, UK, North Africa, and Turkic Republics. She has been involved in all phases of these projects from the structural design, construction planning, fabrication, pre-construction services, to the site activities.
Dr. Akbas has recently been involved in CTBUH local committee in Turkey.
