Charles Berman is an Associate Principal at DS+R / Diller Scofidio + Renfro Architects in New York, joining the studio in 2013. He received a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. With over 34 years of experience, Charles has lent his unique expertise to many cultural, performing arts, and civic projects and has acquired a unique specialization in facade design and fabrication detailing.
For DS+R, Charles was a senior member of the design team of The Shed, a new center for artistic invention in New York. As the project’s Technical Director, he led the development, and the team, focusing on the facade, the structure, and the kinetics system for The Shed. Before his current tenure with DS+R he spent nine years at OMA / Office for Metropolitan Architecture, the acclaimed practice founded by Pritzker Prize winner Rem Koolhaas. He has led many large projects including the new headquarters for China Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Beijing, and the competition for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Specializing in façade design, he has worked during his professional career as a façade consultant at Front, Inc. and Heintges. He is currently also an Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, offering a seminar in facade design and detailing.
