Brisbane's Eagle Street Pier precinct is set to undergo an AU$2.1 billion (US$1.6 billion) dollar makeover after Council approved development plans from the Dexus group.

The Waterfront Brisbane project will include two commercial towers, with hanging gardens, as well as new bars, eateries and shopping districts.

The development will also incorporate about 9,000 square meters of public space, along with a wider resurfaced river walk.

Project Director Matt Beasley said the development would "supercharge" the area and ensure it maintains its reputation as the city's business hub.

"Waterfront Brisbane is a fantastic opportunity to see a key piece of the city transformed that has been underdeveloped for 30 years," he said.

"It will be a fantastic new piece of city."

Existing businesses will be shut down for two years, when construction gets underway in 2022.

Restaurant worker Gizem Temizkan told 9News she understood the need to reinvigorate the area.
"It's worth it," she said.

"There's going to be amazing new development by the river and will be much better than what's here now."

Dexus has also committed to finding an alternative route for the 280 meter stretch of River Walk that will be closed during construction.

The first tower is expected to be completed in 2026.
