St. Louis Historic Bank Transforms into Modern Workspace
In a celebration of heritage and modernity, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) marked its 150th anniversary by moving into its new headquarters located within Downtown St. Louis' iconic Security Building. This transformational project, valued at $1.5 million USD, seamlessly blends historical preservation with contemporary functionality, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Lawrence Group Architects and Integrate Construction Partners (Integrate).
Originally constructed in 1892 by esteemed Boston architects Peabody, Stearns & Furber, the Security Bank Building stands as a testament to St. Louis' rich architectural legacy. Designated both a National Historic Landmark and an official St. Louis Landmark, the building demanded a delicate approach to renovation. The Lawrence Group/Integrate team meticulously revitalized a 7,400-square-foot (687 square-meter) space on the building's first floor, preserving its historic essence while ushering in modern amenities.
Susan McCourt Baltz, Executive Director/CEO of BAMSL, expressed her delight with the project, emphasizing the seamless integration of BAMSL's needs into the design process. Baltz praised the Lawrence Group/Integrate team for their inclusive approach, ensuring that the new space would cater to BAMSL's diverse activities, from events to day-to-day operations.
One of the project's standout features is the preservation of the bank's original character. Lawrence Group/Integrate retained elements such as marble walls, intricate plaster ceilings, and rich wood paneling, seamlessly blending historical charm with contemporary functionality. Even the bank's original two-story safe vault found new purpose as storage space for BAMSL and its extensive membership base of over 5,600 legal professionals.
Mary Sue Sutton, Associate Director at Lawrence Group, highlighted the collaborative vision behind the project, aiming to create a versatile space that could accommodate BAMSL's educational programs and events. The incorporation of 15-foot-high (4.6 meter-high) windows, offering panoramic views of the iconic Gateway Arch and Federal Reserve Plaza, adds a touch of grandeur to the space, making it ideal for gatherings and collaborative work.
However, transforming a dormant space into a vibrant hub of activity presented its challenges. Decades of neglect had taken their toll on the building's infrastructure, necessitating extensive upgrades to mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems. Restoring the original plasterwork and marble walls required specialized expertise, with local subcontractors playing a crucial role in preserving the building's historical integrity.
Scott Zola, President of Integrate, reflected on the rewarding nature of historic restoration projects, where each painstaking restoration breathes new life into the past. The renovated space stands as a harmonious blend of historic charm and modern efficiency, a testament to the enduring legacy of St. Louis' architectural heritage.
In its new incarnation, the Security Building not only serves as a functional workspace but also as a living testament to St. Louis' rich history. The transformative project ensures that the legacy of the Security Building endures for generations to come, offering a glimpse into the past while embracing the future.
