New Office Tower to Replace Demolished 1970s Icon in Tokyo

The former Kokusai Akasaka Building will be replaced with a new 32-story office tower with a floor area of 73,000 square meters.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021 with completion in 2024. The new building will be 160 meters tall, more than double the height of the building it is replacing.

The 6,000-square-meter site is located above Tameiko-Sanno Station and across the street from Sanno Park Tower and the Prime Minister’s Official Residence.

In 2019, Nippon Life Insurance Company paid 40 billion Yen (US$368 million) to Sekisui House to acquire a 50 percent ownership share of the property. Sekisui House has acquired the property in 2014 for 74 billion Yen (US$680 million).

The 20-story Kokusai Akasaka Building was built in 1973 for Kokusai Motor Company, Ltd. Demolition began in 2019.
