Hundreds of homes in Liverpool city center have been approved by the council's planning committee.

A development housing 278 apartments on William Jessop Way at Prince's Dock was approved by the council's planning committee this morning,

The site was once the home of a proposal to build the massive Shanghai Tower skyscraper which would have had 55 stories. The current plans would see a tower 31 stories high built, with another, smaller, 11-story section next to it.

Speaking to the committee, planning consultant Ian Ford said the plans bore similarities in terms of its size to a proposal approved by the planning committee for the same site in 2018.

Mr. Ford said: "It has been redesigned and resubmitted to ensure the proposals are commercially viable and the applicants have worked with their preferred local contractor to ensure this £50 million (US$68 million) development and investment in the city can be delivered.

"Both applicants, Peel and Your Housing Group, have a history of delivering high quality development in the city."

A representative for the scheme's architect, Falconer Chester Hall, confirmed the building would be operated by Your Housing Group and would not be funded through the controversial "fractional investment" process.

The meeting also saw plans for 300 homes approved at the junction of St Anne Street and Fox Street in Everton.
