Greenwich Council Approves Plans for Housing Tower Outside Grocery Store
Greenwich Council has approved planning permission for a 15-story tower that’s set to be built outside Woolwich Tescos, which has received some pushback from residents. The tower block will contain 134 flats as well as retail and office space.
A three-hour-long planning meeting brought an end to years of debate surrounding the redevelopment of the area. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will now have the final say on the approval of the new tower block.
Plans had already been scrapped for a 27-story tower block on the same site two years ago. But Greenwich Council is facing pressure to meet housing targets. Another seven tower blocks ranging between nine and 16 stories in height will be built along the street. Tesco first won approval for its store, hundreds of new homes and a new council HQ in Woolwich center in 2007.
