Gothenburg may be Sweden’s second-largest city, but with set of new skyscrapers on the way it’s soon to become its highest-profile one. Chief among them is the Gothenburg City Gate project, which upon completion will be among the tallest office towers in the Nordics—a region that includes Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland.

At 144 meters (approx. 473 feet), and 36 stories high the building will also join the ranks of some of the tallest in Scandinavia, behind the soon-to-be-completed Karlatornet (245 meters) in Gothenburg, the Turning Torso in Malmö (190 meters), and the Kaknastornet in Stockholm (155 meters).

“The first thing we thought about when we started on the competition was how to make a tower that felt welcoming,” explains Henning Larsen Partner-in-Charge Søren Øllgaard. “We were more interested in how to make a tower that was an embedded part of the city, a building that was generous and open to the city of Gothenburg.”

The building’s ground level is arrayed around a sunny plaza that creates not just a welcoming entryway, but also shields visitors from harsh wind in the cold months. Located in the Gårda business district, it will also be a hub for activity and visual anchor in the fast-growing neighborhood.

Won in 2015, Gothenburg City Gate is expected to reach completion in early 2022.
