CTBUH conducted a market audit of projects including timber in some way, which determined that, of 161 projects of seven stories’ or greater height, either proposed, under construction or completed worldwide, only 11 are steel-timber hybrid structures currently (i.e. using timber and steel as primary vertical and lateral structural elements). A further 16 projects are steel-timber-concrete hybrid structures (using a combination of these materials to achieve structural integrity). This breakdown of projects is shown in the table below.
Two preliminary conclusions can be drawn from this:
1. There is a significant market opportunity for steel-timber hybrid structures for high-rise buildings globally.
2. The team identified 21 projects that could potentially be case studies for the research.
