CTBUH Seattle Presents: Tour of Third & Battery

Wednesday, 17 January 2024 | Seattle

The CTBUH Seattle Chapter organized a tour of the 3rd and Battery project in Seattle on Jan 17th as an educational event for the chapter board and future leaders.

Project Description

Located in downtown Seattle, this 15-story, 112-unit residential project is more than just Seattle's greenest apartment building and the world's first net zero apartment high-rise (as certified by the International Future Living Institute) -- 303 Battery (aka Third & Battery) also represents the innovative and tenacious spirit of its design team. Developed by Sustainable Living Innovations (SLI), in a design collaboration with CollinsWoerman architects and DCI Engineers that began back in 2007, 303 Battery uses a premanufactured, sustainable building solution that aims to reduce construction time, particularly on "orphan lots" of major cities, that are otherwise difficult to develop.

303 Battery's sustainability highlights include:

  • 506 solar panels on the building's roof, west balconies and south wall.
  • The 100% electric building is projected to produce a 5% surplus of clean electricity on an annual basis, translating to negative operation emissions.
  • When looking at the operational and embodied carbon emissions over the building’s projected life (100 years), the team estimates the proposed design will save 34,549 tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to 7,688 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year – translating into a 93% reduction over the baseline.
  • A 15% embodied carbon reduction, compared to standard concrete structures.
