A significant milestone, the China Merchants Bank Headquarters in Shenzhen has recently topped out. Designed by Foster + Partners, the project comprises a striking 77-story skyscraper as the centerpiece of a mixed-use development and aims to redefine urban living in the region.

Inspired by both Chinese cultural motifs and natural formations, the building's design integrates elements such as stacked bays and geometric facades. Notably, the north facade mirrors China's rugged rock formations, while the south-facing facade draws from traditional paper folding techniques. In addition to its visual appeal, it prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency, achieving a three-star rating in the Chinese '"Assessment Standard for Green Building."

Grant Brooker, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, highlighted the building's significance as a symbol of China Merchants Bank's legacy. The design's expansive curved windows offer panoramic views of Shenzhen Bay, making it a dynamic canvas that captures the changing light and atmosphere throughout the day.

The façade, made from glass and stainless steel, is the result of an iterative modeling process to minimize the energy consumption of active systems by carefully balancing solar shading, daylight, and thermal loads. The MEP systems respond to their context, adopting advanced technologies that allow smart control of the environment.

Optimal working conditions are achieved through low-emission materials, effective temperature and humidity control, and glare mitigation. Coupling the off-center core layout with a unique natural ventilation detail in the column profiles allows for natural ventilation on all levels. This high-quality indoor environment enhances staff wellbeing and improves productivity. The design focuses on functionality and occupant comfort, featuring double-height atriums and landscaped terraces to enhance the well-being of its users.

The mixed-use development surrounding further enriches the urban fabric, providing retail, cultural, and commercial spaces. Embracing sustainable design principles, the development implements strategies to conserve water and manage stormwater runoff effectively, that also meet the "sponge city" requirements for a new development of this scale.

As the China Merchants Bank Headquarters nears completion, it stands as a testament to innovative design and environmental responsibility, shaping Shenzhen's skyline while fostering sustainable, vibrant communities.
