The 2011 International Student Tall Building Design Competition ran on the theme of "Why Tall?" Now is the time to redefine the meaning and value of tall buildings in our modern society, by highlighting the aspects of green, safety, and humanity in tall buildings. In light of global climate change, public awareness of urban sustainability has forced designers to rethink and reinvent the role of the high-rise building type. They must contribute to the protection of endangered environments and offer sustainable alternatives to how cities operate. See more information on the three winners and projects below.

The design rethinks the current lifestyle and high-rise development mode and develop a new kind of urban life mode called "MultipliCITY" to stimulate the sustainability of the high-rises. Programs and natural light have been two main parameters in the design process. The purpose is to promote a more effective and efficient life cycle and energy usage in the urbanization process by hybriding adaptive and flexible urban programs according to the site environment and making each program in the proper light environment to make full use of the natural light resources, which stimulates the sustainability of the building and the city.

We propose a structure with the capability of absorbing water from heavy rainclouds such as nimbostratus and cumulonimbus that occur over a kilometer in height and cause heavy flood damage in cities, as well as water molecules from fogs, clouds and rain so that they can be collected, stored and gradually evaporated to supplement water moisture during hot and dry periods, ultimately causing evaporative cooling to occur. With this natural cyclical process that requires zero-sum energy input, the heat island effect is countered, temperature lowered and flood damage reduced.

The tower is planned with all the facilities a neighborhood would need. It's main characteristic is the ramp that develops itself between two structural skins. It begins in the street level and finishes in a panoramic swimming pool. In the ramp are situated the neighborhood basic services, such as newsstands, kiosks, bread kiosks or wi-fi zones. It is a pedestrian ramp-street, and when it arrives to each of the five different squares it also becomes part of the program and activities conducted therein. The main innovation of this tower is the creation of a self-sustaining neighborhood with a particular element, a pedestrian ramp.
