After nearly 20 years at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), Dr. Antony Wood has made the decision to step down as CTBUH President at the end of this year. Wood joined CTBUH in a voluntary role in 2004, as Vice President for Europe and Research, before being invited to Chicago to take up the executive directorship (later, CEO) in 2006.
His tenure has seen the significant development of CTBUH in all areas, growing the organization from one member of staff in 2006 to the global entity it is today. Notable achievements during that time include a ten-fold increase in membership; establishment of the CTBUH research division and regional offices in Asia and Europe; formation of myriad chapters and committees around the world; growth of the annual conference and awards program into world-class events; expansion of the content-creation and publishing divisions; and the establishment of the world’s first master's degree focused on the genre—the Masters of Tall Buildings and Vertical Urbanism (MTBVU)—as a joint program between CTBUH and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
“It has been the honor of my life to lead the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat for almost two decades,” says Wood. “However, it is time to hand over to a new generation of CTBUH leaders now and to seek other paths to support the industry and influence the sustainable development of cities.”
Wood worked alongside seven chairmen during his tenure at CTBUH, including Ron Klemencic, of Magnusson Klemencic Associates (2001–2006); David Scott, formerly of Arup, now Laing O Rourke (2006–2009); Sang Dae Kim, of Korea University (2009–2011); Timothy Johnson, of NBBJ (2011–2014); David Malott, formerly of KPF, now AI Planetworks (2014–2017); Steve Watts, of Turner & Townsend Alinea (2017–2023); and Shonn Mills, of Whitby Wood Mills (2023–present).
“On behalf of the current board, past boards, and the seven chairmen that Antony has worked alongside, we would like to thank him for the tireless energy, vision, and passion he has devoted to the organization,” says CTBUH Chairman Shonn Mills. “Antony has completely modernized the organization over nearly two decades, while growing it into the significant global presence it is today. We wish him the best of luck with his next career step.”
Wood will continue with CTBUH until the end of this year, and the organization will be recognizing his contributions during the upcoming CTBUH 2024 International Conference, 23–27 September, in London and Paris.
