Shiromal Fernando is one of the leading structural engineers in Sri Lanka has been involved in many high rise buildings in the country, including the tallest structures.
He holds the degrees B.Sc. Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering & MPhil Degree from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and is also a Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka. He is a distinguished and active member of many institutions and societies of Sri Lanka such as Institution of Engineers, Society of Structural Engineers & Technical Advisory committee of Disaster Management Center, and also served as the Honorary Secretary of the Society of Structural Engineers during 2005-2008. Furthermore, he is the Vice President of the Green Building Council Sri Lanka since 2010. He is a member of the Sri Lankan Standards Institute where he is working with the committee to develop Cement and Steel standards for Sri Lanka since 2009. He is also a proud Member of American Society of Structural Engineers (ASCE).
He was a key organizer of many international conferences in Sri Lanka such as the “International Conference on Structural Engineering, Construction and Management” (ICSECM 2011, Kandy Sri Lanka), the “International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment” (ICSBE 2012 Kandy Sri Lanka) and the Fourth International Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction Management (ICSECM 2013, Kandy Sri Lanka).
He started his career as a structural engineer with Design Consortium Ltd Colombo, Sri Lanka from 1994 - 2008. He served as a former director/ principal structural engineer, Design Consortium Ltd from 2008-2011. His famous projects working at DCL include; the Trillium Residencies Colombo, the Ceylinco Celestial Residencies, “Little Sisters of the Poor” Hospital, Modern Fish Market at Peliyagoda, office complex for Commissioner General of Labour in Colombo, facility buildings and infrastructure design works for BAM International at the Dickkowita Habour, Ramada Hotel in Kalutara & Ave Maria Auditorium in Negombo. Moreover he was also involved as the structural engineer in other key projects such as the Bank of Ceylon Building in Kandy, Hydepark Residencies & multi-storied vehicle car park and traffic improvements in Kandy.
He served as the Visiting Lecturer, Building Economics Department, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka from 1994 – 1999. He is currently the Visiting lecturer, Earth resources Department, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka since 2010 and also serves as the Senior Lecturer, Civil Engineering Department, Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka since 2010.
He leads the Structural Engineering Company; Civil & Structural Engineering Consultants Private Ltd. which is based in Colombo. Civil and Structural Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd, more commonly known as ""CSE Consultants‟ is a state of the art consultancy firm comprising some of the prominent Structural Engineers in the industry and academia. CSE strives to maintain a high level of quality in its services and aims to be the trend setter in the industry through innovation, state of the art technologies and excellence in engineering. Being able to undertake well over 100 projects within a short span since its establishment reflects the unmatched potential of the dynamic team.
Mr. Fernando serves as the structural consultant for the Colombo Lotus Tower and Grand Hyatt Colombo which are currently the most prestigious land mark developments in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, projects of CSEC include; John Keells Holding Waterfront Development, Colombo, Grand Hyatt Colombo, AVIC Residential Project by Astoria Hotels Corp. Pvt Ltd, Colombo City Centre, Al-Nakheel Development Project, Jeddah, KSA, Star City Burma, Altair Colombo, Macksons Residencies, Southern Highway toll buildings and toll plazas, Katunayake.
