Professor Ron Henderson, FASLA, is an international leader in Landscape Architecture design, history, research, and education. He is Professor and Director of the Landscape Architecture + Urbanism Program at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago and has held previous appointments at Harvard University, Pennsylvania State University, and Tsinghua University in Beijing. He is founding principal at L+A Landscape Architecture, based in Newport, whose work in North America, Asia, and Europe has been widely recognized with international, national, and regional landscape architecture and urban design awards. Recent and current projects include the Historic Newport Town Spring (Newport, RI), Elizabethan Theater at Chateau d'Hardelot (Condette, France), Memorial to the Abolition of the Slave Trade (Nantes, France), Gardens of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston, MA), and Yinzhou Central Park Master Plan (Ningbo, China). He is a founder of City Walk Providence, an 8-mile long network of urban landscapes connecting Roger Williams Park and India Point Park through eight Providence neighborhoods.
Current research by Henderson includes Long and Narrow, a typological investigation of linear urban landscapes, and The Driverless City Project, an investigation of the urban design implications of driverless and autonomous vehicles, for which he was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation.
He is Senior Fellow of Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, a Japan-US Friendship Commission Creative Artist Fellow, and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. An exhibition of his sketchbooks of Japanese cherry blossoms were exhibited at the U.S. National Arboretum, Washington, D.C. in Spring 2018 and the exhibition will be re-installed in Spring 2019. He is author of The Gardens of Suzhou, which was published in 2013 by University of Pennsylvania Press.
