Robert T. Ratay, Ph.D., P.E., is a consulting structural engineer in private practice, and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University in New York. His over five decades of structural engineering practice includes design, investigation of failures, and university teaching. He has been an expert consultant/witness for engineers, contractors, owners, insurance companies and attorneys in the investigation and litigation support of over 250 cases of structural problems. Earlier in his career he had been a structural designer with prominent engineering firms, as well as a Professor, Chairman and Dean of engineering in academia. He is the Editor-in-Chief of three books: Handbook of Temporary Structures in Construction, 3rd edition; Forensic Structural Engineering, 2nd edition; and Structural Condition Assessment. He has published numerous articles and lectured widely in the US and abroad on the subjects of structural failures and forensic structural engineering practice. A Fellow of ASCE and IABSE, he is the originator and Founding Chair of both the important ASCE/SEI-37 Design Loads on Structures During Construction Standard, and of the internationally acclaimed IABSE Working Group on Forensic Structural Engineering. In 2003 he was named by Engineering News-Record as one of the Top Newsmakers 2003 who made a mark in the construction industry.
