Richard is a Director in London and has worked in the Property and Building teams for 19 years. He is particularly interested in projects where architecture and structure exist in symbiosis. Richard gained his PhD from Southampton University and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He joined WSP in 2005 after deciding life as an academic didn’t quite suit his passion for design. However, his thirst for research still drives him to find innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.

He has worked on prestigious projects such as The Shard, London Bridge Station and most recently 1 Undershaft, the tallest building in the City of London, where he is the Project Director and leading the multidiscipline engineering team.

Beyond his projects, Richard wants to ensure the next generation of engineers has the right tools to succeed and dedicates significant time to training graduates and apprentices. Efficiency is key to his design philosophy, and he is currently researching how to extend and retain existing buildings to maximize their potential.
