Having worked in London, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam and Australia, Karen has strong experience in a variety of residential, hospitality, sport, education and commercial projects. Karen’s Chinese and British background provides her with the communication skills, cultural understanding and high quality design training to work successfully in international markets.

Karen studied architecture in London and worked there with David Morley Architects, Aukett Fitzroy Robinson, and Sheppard Robson Partnerships on a broad range of projects from inception to completion. In 2012, Karen joined Bates Smart Melbourne from Foster and Partners Hong Kong where she was responsible for Suning Tower, Nanjing and VietinBank, Hanoi. Karen has been a guest critic at Bartlett School of Architecture, University of Nottingham and has also been a design studio tutor at University of Melbourne.

Experienced in all areas of the architectural process with demonstrated commitment to the highest standard in both design development and delivery, her key strengths are at the front end design stages of the project, where she enjoys working closely with clients to find appropriate solutions. Her experience encompasses all aspects of architectural services from client liaison, design development and documentation to contract administration, fulfilling the project architect’s role. She is currently responsible for a number of mixed used developments and urban design projects in Melbourne.
