Josh Chaiken, a Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox, has played a key role in the design of a number of KPF’s most high-profile projects throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia. Since joining KPF in 1986, he has led the design of a range of hotels and mixed-use developments, high-rise office buildings, corporate headquarters, retail venues, residences, and academic/institutional facilities.

Mr. Chaiken has served as Senior Designer on a variety of high-profile projects including the 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center, one of the world’s tallest buildings. Hosting a dynamic program including office, retail, a Park Hyatt Hotel, and public “Sky Walk” on the 100th floor, this iconic structure has been recognized with several prestigious design awards including the Society of American Registered Architects’ Design Award for Excellence (2009), the American Council of Engineering Companies National Engineering Excellence Awards Honor Award (2009), the MIPIM Asia Awards’ Participants’ Choice Award (2009), and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Best Tall Building Worldwide Award (2008).

Mr. Chaiken also led the design of the Langham Xintiandi and Andaz Shanghai Hotels and of the Grand Hyatt Tokyo at Roppongi Hills, the largest private-sector urban redevelopment project in Japan’s history. Designed as the centerpiece of a 27-acre development at the heart of Tokyo’s metropolitan area, this mixed-use project also contains office, residential, retail, performing arts theatre, museum, and TV broadcast studio.

Mr. Chaiken’s recent design work includes Otemachi 1-6, a 1.9 million square foot mixed-use project in Tokyo that will contain headquarters offices for a prominent financial institution and will be topped by a 130-room five-star hotel. Mr. Chaiken’s recent experience also includes the award-winning Ritz Carlton Hotel and residences in Toronto. The top 30 floors of the 260,000-square-foot tower comprise 360,000 square feet of condominiums which sit atop the hotel guestroom floors. The first five floors contain amenities including an 8,000-square-foot ballroom, meeting rooms and a 25,000-square-foot spa. Also in Toronto, Mr. Chaiken designed the RBC Centre, a 41-story, 1.2-million-SF office building, the first LEED Gold Certified office building in Canada, and Ernst & Young Tower at 100 Adelaide Street, a million-square-foot tower with retail base connected to an underground shopping arcade in Toronto. He also led the design of MNP Tower at 1021 West Hastings Street, one of few remaining high-profile commercial waterfront development sites in downtown Vancouver.

Prior to joining KPF, Mr. Chaiken served as Director of Architectural Design at Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, heading up their design efforts with a number of projects ranging from master planning to office towers. He received both his Bachelor of Architecture, summa cum laude and Master of Architecture from Princeton University. A Registered Architect in the State of New York, Mr. Chaiken is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
