Born August 21, 1919, Dr. Jack Cowan received a 1st class honors Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and a Master of Science from Manchester, United Kingdom; his PhD and a Doctor of Engineering from Sheffield, United Kingdom; and a Master of Architecture and an Honorary Doctor of Architecture from Sydney, Australia.
After serving in the military with the Royal Engineers during World War II he was appointed first Professor of Architectural Science at the University of Sydney in 1953 as well as serving as Dean from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Cowan has been a Visiting Professor at various American, Asian and African universities and has authored 27 books, has published more than 300 papers in various journals, served as editor of the 25 volumes of the Elsevier Architectural Science Series, and is the editor of the quarterly research journal Architectural Science Review for 40 years.
