Craig C. Burton, PE, LEED AP BD+C, passionately devotes his career and lifestyle to advocacy, education and action for environmental sustainability. As Director of Clean Technology at PositivEnergy Practice, he focuses on building performance evaluation and analytics, carbon tool development, and the integration of high performance design strategies for new and existing buildings and urban places. He has worked in the building performance analysis field for the past ten years, in the US, Canada and the UK, and has been involved in a broad range of international building design, retrofit and master planning work.
As a leader of PEP’s Retrofit Gateway Services Program, Craig provided energy metrics collection and analysis, planning and follow-up services to help Chicago area commercial building owners craft a strategic retrofit Road Map to achieve a minimum 20% energy use reduction goal over a five year period. He led the development of ""EnCompass"", a unique on-line tool to help Chicago area commercial building owners/managers assess existing building performance and evaluate options and associated cost savings for energy-conserving improvements. Under his direction, PEP is developing tools to facilitate carbon reduction in buildings, campuses and cities, including Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture’s competition-winning master plan for EXPO 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Craig joined PEP after leaving his position as Studio Head of the Performative Design Group at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, New York, where he led the high performance design analysis of the AIA award-winning Heliotrace Façade System, a dynamic solar shading and daylight harvesting system. He was previously a Senior Sustainability Consultant at Building Design Partnership, based in London, UK. At BDP he undertook thermal modeling, natural ventilation analysis, CFD analysis, code analysis and property assessments to assist architects and developer clients with strategic options for energy-efficient infrastructure improvements, resource management and sustainability master planning.
ENR named Craig one of its 2014 ‘Top 20 Under 40’ design and construction professionals in the Midwest. He is a founding member and acting outreach chair of the IBPSA Chicago Chapter (International Building Performance Simulation Association), serves on the ASHRAE SPC 209 and is active in the Chicago ASHRAE Young Engineers Association (YEA). Before moving to Chicago, he was active in the New York Committee on Sustainability.
