Bruce Kuwabara is one of Canada’s leading architects and the recipient of the 2006 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s (RAIC) Gold Medal, the highest national honour bestowed on an individual architect. A founding partner of KPMB, Kuwabara has played a leading role in establishing the firm’s international reputation for architectural excellence. His projects have been recognized with awards from the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Chicago Athenaeum, Business Week/Architectural Record, and the Urban Land Institute, among others.

Kuwabara is also recognized for creating architecture that enriches the public realm and his advocacy of design quality for city building and urban design. He is the design partner of several projects in Toronto’s Cultural Renaissance including Canada’s National Ballet School (2007 AIA Honor Award and the 2008 Urban Land Institute Global Award for Excellence), the Gardiner Museum (2008 Royal Institute of British Architects International Award, Chicago Atheneaum International Award), and the new home for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Many of Kuwabara’s projects participate in significant urban revitalization initiatives, including a number of award winning design competitions. This work includes Kitchener City Hall, the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, the Vaughan Civic Centre, and Le Quartier Concordia in downtown Montreal. He was also the design principal for Manitoba Hydro Place in Winnipeg, the first major building in the next generation of energy-efficient, bioclimatic design (2009 CTBUH Best Tall Buildings Award – Americas, the 2010 AIA COTE Top Ten Green Award).

Kuwabara has taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and at the University of Toronto. He is the first Chair of the Design Review Panel for Waterfront Toronto, the entity responsible for the large scale revitalization of the city’s waterfront, and currently sits on the board of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal.
