Housebuilder Weston Homes and supermarket firm Tesco have secured a resolution to grant planning permission for a 1,280-home urban village in Goodmayes, east London.

The Redbridge council gave the go ahead to transform an existing 4.2 hectare (10.4 acre) Tesco store and car park into a new community called Lorimer Village which it said has a gross development value of £500 million (US$705 million.)

Featured Buildings

A total of 14 towers are planned at the site with the tallest running to 22 stories. The project also includes rebuilding the Tesco store, 1,710 square meters (18,406 square feet) of commercial space, a new primary school, a 327 square meter (3,520-square-foot) village hall, 400 square meter (4,306-square-foot) community hub, landscaped gardens, parking facilities and public transport improvements.

The name of the scheme references Arts & Craft architect Robert Lorimer, who was a pioneer in the building of green suburbs. Plans includes nearly three hectares (eight acres) of landscaped gardens and parks.

Affordable housing will make up 35 percent of the project. The development will also include biodiverse and brown roofs, and be 100 percent electric powered, making use of 682 rooftop solar PV panels.

Parking for the Tesco and residents will be provided underneath the development.

The project would take around eight years to build out, with a start on site expected in early 2022.
