A three-bedroom apartment unit in Sydney’s first residential high-rise building is going to be available for purchase soon.

Built circa 1923, the grand building, named Astor, is located opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens and has been well-maintained over the years.

Designed by Donald Esplin and Stuart Mould, the building and its classical features—such as the terrazzo foyer—are of high historical significance.

The original building was bought by John O’Brien in 1920 for £11,900 (US$13,466) and was opened on 25 October, 1923 by Premier Sir George Fuller, with many of the early tenants prominent entrepreneurs, newspaper proprietors, and wool brokers of the time.

Classic polished timber floors combine with open-plan living to allow for the perfect combination between the past and the present at 123 Macquarie St.

There is also a large separate media room and a communal roof terrace with views of the Harbour.

Listing agent Ettiene West of Morton-Sydney is taking the property to auction on 18 June, 2019 with a guide of AU$1.9 million (US$1.4 million) and said the rarity of the unit had already made it a popular prospect with buyers. “It’s a building that will always stand out,” Mr. West said.

“When buyers see apartments in that building they are drawn in, as people want to live there. It is very tightly held, as people tend to live there a long time.”
