Tokyo Department Store to be Rebuilt with Timber
On 27 May 2022, Marui Group announced that the Shibuya Marui department store will temporarily close its doors on 28 August 2022, while the 51-year-old building undergoes redevelopment.
Shibuya Marui opened its doors in 1971 and has remained the group’s flagship for five decades.
With the company seeking a move towards sustainability, about 60 percent of the structural elements of the new building will be constructed from wood. Compared to the traditional steel-frame method that would normally be used for a building of this scale, incorporating timber will result in a 2,000-ton reduction in carbon emissions.
The building design will incorporate traditional Japanese elements and will maximize the use of natural materials and sunlight. The lead designer is Foster + Partners.
The nine-story building will have a total sales floor space of 2,800 square meters.
