MUFG Bank is planning to redevelop their headquarter building in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district. A newer and larger building would allow the bank to house its trust banking and brokerages under one roof.

The current 24-story building, located at 2-7-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, was built in 1980 as the headquarters of the former Mitsubishi Bank. Mitsubishi has had a presence on this site since 1922 when they completed a 4-story concrete building. They quickly outgrew it, with a 7-story addition added. Those buildings lasted until 1977 when they were demolished to make way for the current 110-meter tall high-rise. The building sits on 10,800 square meters of land in one of the country’s most expensive districts.

Plans for the redevelopment are expected to be firmed up by 2022 with a construction schedule to be announced at a later date.
