Three Housing Developments Adding 1,150 Homes in London, Canada are Endorsed
City politicians in London have endorsed three major housing projects that will bring 1,150 new homes to the city, despite some concerns from local residents. During a planning committee meeting on 13 August 2024, the projects received unanimous support, marking a significant step in the city's housing development.
The largest project involves the construction of 40- and 45-story high-rises at 267 York St., near the downtown CitiPlaza mall. This development will add 1,067 apartments on a site currently used as a parking lot along the Wellington bus rapid transit line. The project is seen as a key part of intensifying the downtown area and reshaping London’s skyline.
A potential issue raised during the meeting was the city’s current sewer capacity. However, city staff reassured that upgrades are in progress and expected to be completed by the end of 2025, which will support the new development. Additionally, a sewage collection line is set to be built in 2025 under the fork of the Thames River that will further enhance capacity and will potentially accommodate an additional 17,000 housing units.
These projects represent a significant boost to London’s housing stock and are part of the city's broader efforts to increase residential density in the downtown area.
