Tall Timber Hybrid Hotel to be Built in Adelaide
The proposed 31 story hotel will be built out of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and steel at 187 Victoria Square – on the corner of Franklin Street and across the road from the Adelaide GPO and the new BHP building. It will sit behind an existing office tower, the former MLC building, which is heritage-listed.
Due to be open in 2024 with an end value of $118.8 million USD ($170 million AUS), the carbon-neutral timber tower designed by Cox Architecture will feature 324 rooms, 22 residential apartments, a sky terrace and a rooftop bar. Thrive Construct is the developer for the project with plans to build a second timber hotel in regional Whyalla, as part of a $209.64 million USD ($300 million AUS) investment in tourism infrastructure in South Australia.
Sustainable hotel construction is growing in prominence in Australia. In 2020, TFE Hotels opened a 220-room hotel, 55 Southbank, built out of CLT and concrete.
