The Toronto Star Building, a fixture of the city's skyline for 53 years, is set to be demolished as part of a major redevelopment at One Yonge. Developer Pinnacle International, which purchased the site in 2012, has applied for a permit to tear down the 25-story Brutalist office tower.

This follows the site’s transformation, with the completion of the 65-story first phase in 2023 and the ongoing construction of SkyTower, a 105-story residential skyscraper. Originally, plans included retaining and expanding the existing Toronto Star office building alongside a large commercial complex. However, changes in office demand and updated city rules requiring commercial space replacement have shifted the focus to constructing new residential towers.

The latest proposal involves two skyscrapers, rising 90 and 95 stories. The soon-to-be demolished building, which lost its iconic rooftop signage in late 2022 after the newspaper’s relocation to The Well, has remained unused for two years. While Pinnacle has not submitted updated planning applications or disclosed full project details regarding the timeline for the destruction, renderings revealed earlier this year confirm the dramatic reshaping of the site.

The demolition permit signals the beginning of a new era for this key site, as Toronto’s waterfront undergoes significant change to accommodate its towering future.
