bKL Architecture has unveiled their winning design for the new UBTECH Headquarters located in Shenzhen, China. The 71,360-square-meter tower includes office, dormitory, retail, and research and development facilities.

The design of the UBTECH Headquarters focuses on the integration of technology and nature. The building, which will stand at 212-meters tall, contains both innovative design and expansive sky gardens, allowing all floors of the mixed-use office building to interact with nature.

The integration of nature throughout the building was conceptualized around the ancient immortals of Chinese culture, embodying the essential characteristics of Chinese fortune and fortitude. Within the tower there are eight gardens, representing the unique qualities of each of the Eight Immortals.

The different building components are connected by an integrated structural frame. The design of the structure and placement of the vertical transportation elements allow for an open and multi-purpose floor plan.

The building will boast a textural screen composed of operable terracotta fins. This exterior screen provides a multi-faceted approach to sustainable design by integrating adaptive solar shading with the use of robotic technologies and a responsive building system. The screen also provides an approach to water collection, giving the tower the ability to conserve water by integrating a water reclamation system that can be used for the building’s landscaping, as well as other essential grey water uses.
