Progress for Remediating UK Buildings with Dangerous Cladding
Seven years after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, a quarter of cladding remediation projects in England have been completed. Of the 4,374 buildings identified with dangerous cladding by May 2024, 1,088 have been fully remediated. These buildings are all at least 11 meters high. However, 53% (2,308 buildings) have yet to begin remediation, according to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities.
Grenfell Tower had aluminium composite material cladding (ACM), which has been a priority in the remediation efforts. Of the 498 buildings with ACM, 436 have been fully remediated. Work has not started on 11 buildings, with some having scheduled start dates.
Legal actions have been prominent in remediation efforts. Willmott Dixon sued five subcontractors to recover £46.7m in remediation costs for a London project. In 2022, contractor Mulalley paid £8m for cladding defects on five Hampshire blocks. Newham Council won a case against building owner Chaplair, forcing it to pay £60,000 for missing a cladding removal deadline on a nine-story block in East London.
