Moscow's Competition-Winning Design Revealed
The competition-winning design for K31 Courtyard has been revealed. The residential complex, designed by UNStudio, is in Moscow. The years following the new masterplan for the city have brought redevelopment of former industrial sites into residential areas. However, this increase in density has brought challenges for encouraging a sense of community. UNStudio’s goal with this project is to have it foster community-building in this rapidly changing city.
The design reinterprets a typical courtyard block in Moscow. It provides various housing typologies as well as outdoor spaces. Project amenities includes a kindergarten, fitness center, and commercial spaces. The top of the building podiums will also be reserved for co-working spaces, sport facilities, and a residential clubhouse.
The façade was parametrically designed with a modular system. The podium’s stepped terraces allow for sufficient sunlight to reach the apartments while also providing a place for verandas, greenhouses, and orangeries. The glazing in the project is used for its reflective properties to give the appeal of lightness and openness to the inner courtyard, whereas the natural wood in the façade creates a warm atmosphere.
