Masterplan that Integrates Greenery Wins Competition in Bratislava
On 5 June, Stefano Boeri Architetti took first place in a design competition to design a masterplan for Chalupkova, a 3-hectare area in central Bratislava. Once home to significant industrial centers and heavily bombed during World War II, this area fell into partial abandonment but has gradually transformed into the Chalupkova development zone, featuring contemporary architecture and a new urban landscape.
The "Urban Oasis" project created by the architects aims to redevelop this area with a mix of residential spaces, green areas, and public functions, creating a new city nucleus. It includes five buildings centered around a large public park, featuring paths, open spaces, and common areas, enhancing the neighborhood's accessibility and providing community spaces.
The buildings vary in height to maximize sunlight in the park and include terraces for recreation and community engagement. The tallest building is positioned at a focal point of the masterplan and serves as a new urban landmark with unique city views. Ground-floor commercial spaces and public functions will foster interaction between public and residential spaces.
Green terraces and roofs enhance urban forestry, biodiversity, and ecosystem benefits. The design prioritizes pedestrian areas and cycle lanes, promoting sustainable mobility. Solar panels will cover roof space and contribute to renewable energy needs. Urban drainage systems, including green roofs, permeable pavements, and rainwater collection will manage water runoff.
Urban Oasis is a significant urban renewal project, reshaping a strategic Bratislava neighborhood and establishing a new urban hub centered around a large public park.
