Phase 2 of the Studio City complex in Macau has topped out. A ceremony celebrating this achievement was hosted by Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of the Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the developer of the hotel and casino resort. Phase 2 is scheduled to complete in December 2022.

The complex already had one 32-story building that completed in 2015. Phase 2 of the development added two additional towers. These additions were both designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Together, the two new towers will offer 900 rooms and suites, 21,000 square meters (236,000 square feet) of shopping and dining, and 2,300 square meters (25,000 square feet) of gaming space.

The elliptical towers have façades with external fins and three gradations of glass. This design strategy not only accentuates the buildings verticality, but also reduces solar heat gain and glare. The towers were oriented and configured to promote natural ventilation within and around the towers. In addition, all timber and timber-based products that were part of the project’s design have been harvested, traded, and sourced in accordance with Forestry Stewardship Council certification. The project has already been named winner of the “Regional Award Asia’” at the BREEAM Awards 2021.
