Historic Houston Office Building Plans for Hotel Conversion
Recently acquired by a new owner, the century-old Scanlan building located at 405 Main St. in downtown Houston will be transformed into a 140-room hotel featuring a restaurant and bar.
According to the Houston Business Journal, the company purchased the 96,699 square feet (8,984 square meters) building after the previous owners returned the property to the lender to avoid foreclosure. Conversion of the building is underway and it has been stated that the hotel will operate under the Canopy by Hilton brand.
Located near the intersection of Main and Preston streets, the 11-story building is identified in the area by a mural depicting a boy riding a bicycle painted on one of its exterior walls. The new owner intends to begin renovations in early 2026, with the hotel’s grand opening anticipated in the summer of 2027.
Originally constructed in 1909 by the family of Thomas Howe Scanlan, a former two-time mayor of Houston, the site holds historical significance as the former location of the “White House of the Republic of Texas,” where two Texas presidents resided before the capital moved to Austin in 1839.
