After five years of planning, the Lincoln Yards’ groundbreaking ceremony was held to signal the start of construction for the first building on the site, ALLY. The entire complex is being developed by Sterling Bay and will be a US$6 billion residential and commercial development. The project will generate thousands of jobs and will include added parkland, an extension of The 606 hiking and biking trail, and a new Metra station.

Located at 1229 West Concord Place, at the southern end of the complex, Ally will be eight stories tall. It will have an area of 29,700 square meters (320,000 square feet). This project was designed by Gensler. It will include lab space for life science firms, which will help Chicago compete for international talent in the biomedical research field.

The site location was previously used to park garbage trucks and store a salt pile. When it was purchased, it contained contamination and toxicity, but this has already been cleaned up for the project.

The project has been approved for public subsidies for its infrastructure work, a tax increment financing agreement obligating the city to fund up to US$1.3 billion.
