Grenfell Tower Potentially Headed for Demolition
Grenfell Tower may soon be taken down, according to a letter posted on social media by the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The burnt-out structure of the high-rise block has been standing for nearly four years since the fire which claimed 72 lives. Review by structural engineers indicates the condition of the tower may require it be taken down to maintain safety. However, no action will be taken before the fifth anniversary of the fire, in 2022, according to the letter.
MHCLG is inviting the public to participate in a series of meetings regarding dismantling the tower. Concurrently, the independent Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission is developing a community-led vision for a memorial.
