Graveyard in Columbus to be Excavated before High-Rise Construction
A graveyard is being excavated in anticipation of the erection of a new skyscraper with 31 stories that will include a hotel and parking garage. The site of the one of the city's five original cemetaries, the remains of many are interred there and must be removed before construction can begin in one of Columbus' prime neighborhoods. The site is bordered by Spruce Street to the north, High Street to the east, Park Street to the west and Convention Center Drive to the south.
As the plot became more desirable due to urban expansion, city officials asked people to stop burying their dead there, but the public was slow to listen. Because many of the burials were covert, they are harder to locate. Soon an archeological investigation will uncover the remaining remains so that construction on The Merchant Building can commence.
