Explosions in Changchun High-Rise Result in One Fatality

28 January 2019 | Changchun, China

Terrified people were seen running through the streets of Changchun in Jilin Province on Friday, January 25, 2019, after several blasts were heard from the 30th story of a high-rise.

Police said the blasts were caused by a man who detonated homemade explosives and some witnesses have reported that “17 explosions occurred in three minutes.”

Police said the man first detonated his vehicle in an underground car park, and then detonated the devices from the building above.

He died in the second round of blasts, but it is unclear whether anyone else was killed.

Witnesses reported hearing several bangs in what was initially suspected to have been a terror attack.

But New York Times reporter Austin Ramzy claimed the 17 blasts came when objects were thrown from a building above.

He tweeted a video showing explosives falling from the building and detonating as onlookers flee.

The latest statement from the local government said the incident is being treated as “a criminal case.”

Initial witness statements also claimed that explosives were thrown from a high-rise building onto the street.

Authorities confirmed a criminal investigation has opened.

The explosions happened at the Wanda Shopping Plaza in the city, which is in northeastern Jilin Province.

People are being urged to stay away from the area following the blasts, which happened at around 2:30 PM local time.

The shopping center is owned by Wong Jianlin.
