Excavation Underway For Hotel And Observation Tower in Midtown, New York City

740 8th Avenue is a planned 1,067-foot (325.1-meter) hotel and observation tower in Midtown, Manhattan.

The 52-story supertall was designed by ODA along with SLCE Architects and developed by Extell. The skyscraper will deliver 776,000 square feet (72,092 square meters) of space with 825 hotel rooms as well as a public observatory and a thrilling drop-ride attraction. Retail and restaurant space as well as recreational space will also be included.

Lendlease is the general contractor, WSP is the structural engineer, and Ancora Engineering is handling the excavation and foundations for the property. The site sits at the border of Midtown and Hell's Kitchen 

Official renderings haven't been released besides a schematic diagram showing an unconventional and intriguing pinnacle. Three lower-rise buildings are depicted at the base of the skyscraper, and the upper half of the central tower is shown clad in a distinctive corrugated façade.

The drop ride will consist of three enclosed 260-foot (79.2-meter) tracks within the northern, southern, and western sides of the building’s stem. Each ride vehicle will carry up to four passengers on multiple lifts. 

The project is anticipated to reach completion in the second quarter of 2027.
