Designs Unveiled for a Cultural and Business Hub in Hangzhou Currently Under Construction
The designs for "Urban Glen," a mixed-use project in Hangzhou by architects Büro Ole Scheeren has been publicly shared. Developed by property developer New World Development, the scheme integrates work, living, nature, and culture in a landmark development. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the mixed-use project spans 800,000 square feet (74,322 square meters) and features two high-rises, linking offices, a luxury hotel, and leisure spaces. Located between West Lake and the Qiantang River, Urban Glen is part of the transformative Wangjiang New Town initiative, aimed at enhancing Hangzhou’s cultural and business landscape.
Over 500,000 square feet (46,452 square meters) is dedicated to office space, operated by K11 Atelier, a brand known for blending art and culture in next-gen workspaces. The development includes a Rosewood Hotel and the central Urban Glen space connects the two high-rises, offering interactive areas such as meeting rooms, retail, dining, and art terraces. Inspired by Hangzhou’s green hills, the design features cascading volumes and weaving terraces that bring nature into the space, maximizing daylight and providing visual connections between the interior and exterior.
The project’s dual façade blends a smooth urban shell with an abstracted inner landscape. The external façade uses recessed channels and vertical glass strips, while the inner stepped design fosters green spaces, creating a vibrant cultural experience accessible to hotel guests, office workers, and the public. Urban Glen redefines urban density by integrating nature, culture, and leisure to foster community and social interaction.
