The architecture firms SOM and gad have won an international competition to design the Hangzhou Science and Technology Innovation Central Business District (CBD) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. The master plan envisions a 3.7-square-kilometer hub that integrates advanced transit connections and the natural landscape of the Jiangnan region to create a flexible and innovative environment for technology industries.

As part of the Hangzhou West Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, the CBD is strategically located around Hangzhou West Railway Station, enhancing regional and national connectivity through rail and expressways. The design aims to optimize Hangzhou’s urban layout, establishing it as a global technology hub.

The plan features a central green axis extending from a main park through eight U-shaped clusters designed for various stages of business growth, promoting public engagement and adaptability. The transportation network integrates rail lines, major roads, and local streets to reduce commute times and boost urban connectivity.

The proposal emphasizes ecological sustainability, blending natural landscapes with urban development. It includes flexible industrial clusters and adaptable architectural configurations to foster collaboration and shared spaces, all centered around the park to connect urban and community areas.

Organized into five thematic zones—comprehensive services, future trends, fashion and health, high-quality production, and unicorn startups—the CBD encourages collaboration between industries and academia. Nearly 1.2 square kilometers of green space, accounting for 32 percent of the core area, will include jogging trails, outdoor sports facilities, and cultural venues to enhance the quality of life.

The CBD is part of Hangzhou’s strategy to become a global innovation center and elevate the city’s West Science and Technology Innovation Center. The master plan will soon be presented for public feedback as Hangzhou continues its development into a major international tech hub.
