Architect Bjarke Ingels Group as well as a team of collaborators, composed of A-lab, Comte, Civitas & Menon, have designed Oslo Science City. This re-envisioning of the city is part of Oslo’s 2019 “Strategy for the Development of the Knowledge Capital.” This project plans to have net-zero emission during both development and operation.

This designed innovation district spans 1.4 million square (15 million square feet) and would be home to 150,000 scientists, students, and entrepreneurs. Currently the city already has about 300 start-up companies, 7,500 researchers, 10,000 hospital employees, and 30,000 students. In addition, the Oslo region is predicted to grow 22 percent in population by 2045 which would be an influx of 1.6 million new inhabitants.

The project targeted four themes for the city: Health and Life Sciences; Climate, Energy, and Environment; Digitalization and Computational Science; and Democracy and Inclusion. The design uses a holistic approach to planning that not only efficiently uses land for densification, but will simultaneously increase biomass for the city.
