Demolition of 30-Story Osaka Building Complete Making Way for Redevelopment
Demolition of the the Osaka Maru Building, that had been a 30-story cylindrical skyscraper in Umeda, at a height of 124.1 meters, and a total floor area of 41,069.4 square meters has been confirmed. CTBUH had originally reported on the plans for demolition of the building in 2022.

The Osaka Maru Buidling was designed by Fujita Kogyo, opening in April 1976 with 35 stores and a hotel comprising 460 guest rooms. In June 2023 demolition began concluded by September 2024, with the site temporarily functioning as a shuttle bus terminal for the Osaka Expo before redevelopment begins.
Daiwa House Industry has announced plans for the tentavily named "Osaka Maru Building Reconstruction Project," a 40-floor, 192-meter-high mixed-use complex that reinterprets the original cylindrical shape. Scheduled to begin construction in winter 2025 the new facility will include hotels, offices, concert halls, stages, commercial spaces, and observation areas. The project will is designed by Nikken Sekkei and Fujita Design Community, and aims to create a vibrant hub for diverse activities, fostering connections and enhancing user experiences. It is expected to be completed and open in 2030.
