Construction Resumes for 62-Story Ethiopian High-Rise
Ethiopia has revived its plan to construct a 62-story, 327.5-meter-tall headquarters for Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) in Addis Ababa’s Mexico Square. Initially proposed in 2023, the $445 million tower faced setbacks due to logistical and funding issues. Now back on track, EEP is inviting bids from financially stable international and domestic contractors with experience in projects exceeding $370 million and annual turnovers of at least $230 million over five years.
The development will surpass the 209-meter Commercial Bank of Ethiopia building and would become Sub-Saharan Africa’s tallest structure upon completion. Occupying a 20,792-square-meter site with a total built-up area of nearly 198,000 square meters, the high-rise will include three basement levels for parking and services, and 55 upper floors housing EEP offices, sky gardens, and a rooftop restaurant.
The project represents both Ethiopia’s economic ambitions and a symbol of national pride. In addition to enhancing the energy sector’s infrastructure, the building is positioned to support tourism and business in Addis Ababa’s Financial District. EEP has emphasized strict deadlines and performance standards, calling the project “more than a building—it’s a national milestone.”
